Help & FAQ
Everything you need to know about Compass.
What is Compass?
Compass is a personal finance app built for people who stack Bitcoin. It helps you see your entire financial life — spending, net worth, accounts, and goals — denominated in both dollars and Bitcoin. Instead of hiding your BTC in a corner of a spreadsheet, Compass puts it at the center: your net worth updates in real-time as the price moves, your spending is measured against how many sats it cost you, and your goals are set in the asset that matters most to you. Compass is read-only — it never touches your funds, never executes trades, and never gives investment advice. It is a tool for clarity, not a custodian.
Getting Started
How do I create an account?
On web, go to compassbtc.app/login, select "Create account", enter your email, and we'll send you a sign-in link — no password needed. Click the link in your email and you're in. You can also sign up with Google in one tap. On mobile, download the Compass app and enter your phone number to receive a one-time code.
What happens during onboarding?
Onboarding is a short quiz that helps Compass understand you — your Bitcoin conviction, your stacking habits, what you spend on that you wish you didn't, and what goal you're working toward. At the end, you can optionally connect your Bitcoin wallet. None of the answers are permanent; you can update your preferences anytime in Settings.
Is there a free trial?
Better — a 30-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked. Buy a lifetime license, use the full app on every platform, and if it's not for you within 30 days we refund you in full.
What does Compass cost?
One price: a $60 lifetime license for the first 100 licenses, then $120. Pay once and own Compass forever — desktop, mobile, and web, with every update we ever ship. No subscription.
Your Bitcoin Wallet
What is an xpub and why does Compass need it?
An xpub (extended public key) is a string your hardware wallet can generate that lets any app derive every address in your wallet and read your total balance — without being able to spend anything. Think of it as a view-only window into your wallet. Compass uses it to show your Bitcoin balance and track how your stack grows over time. Your private key and recovery phrase are never involved.
Can Compass spend or move my Bitcoin?
No — not ever. xpub is strictly read-only. Compass has no signing capability, no access to your private key, and no way to initiate any transaction. Your coins stay on your hardware wallet at all times.
Which hardware wallets are supported?
Any wallet that can export an xpub works with Compass — including Coldcard, Trezor, Ledger, Foundation Passport, BitBox, and others. On mobile, you can scan your xpub as a QR code directly from your device. On web, you paste the xpub string from your wallet's settings.
What if I don't have a hardware wallet?
No problem. You can enter your Bitcoin balance manually and update it whenever you like. You can also track Bitcoin held on exchanges separately in the Finances section. A hardware wallet is the safest place to hold Bitcoin long-term, but Compass works however you stack.
How is my xpub protected?
On mobile, your xpub never leaves your device — it is stored in your phone's secure hardware vault (iOS Keychain / Android Keystore). On web, it is encrypted with AES-256-GCM before being stored, and the decryption key lives outside the database — so even a full database breach cannot read it. See our Privacy Policy for the full breakdown.
Spending & Transactions
How do I add a transaction?
Tap or click the "+" button on the Spending page. Enter the merchant, amount, date, and category. You can also add a note. Transactions are stored privately and only visible to you.
What categories are available?
Compass uses four spending buckets: Bitcoin (sats you stacked), Necessary (rent, groceries, utilities — the non-negotiables), Discretionary (dining out, entertainment, subscriptions), and Wasteful(spending you wish you hadn't). You name the Wasteful category yourself during onboarding — it's personal to how you think about your money.
What is the Wasteful category for?
Wasteful is your honest category. It's for spending you regret — the impulse buys, the subscriptions you forgot to cancel, the takeout you didn't need. Tracking it separately gives you a number you can actually work to shrink each month. You name it yourself so it reflects what matters to you.
Can I import transactions from my bank or a CSV file?
CSV import is on the roadmap and will be available soon. For now, transactions are entered manually. Manual entry takes 30 seconds and tends to make you more aware of your spending — which is often the point.
How do I edit or delete a transaction?
Tap any transaction in the Spending list to open its detail. From there you can change the category, amount, merchant, date, or note, or delete it entirely.
Net Worth & Finances
What does the Finances section track?
Finances is your net worth dashboard. It combines everything: your Bitcoin wallet balance, Bitcoin on exchanges, cash on hand, savings accounts, investments, property, and debts. Everything is shown in both USD and Bitcoin so you can see the full picture in your preferred denomination.
How do I add accounts like savings or investments?
On the Finances page, tap "Add account" and choose the type — cash, savings, investment, property, or debt. Enter the current balance and a label. You can update balances anytime; Compass does not connect to bank accounts directly.
Why measure net worth in Bitcoin?
Because USD depreciates over time and Bitcoin is the hardest money ever created. Seeing your net worth in BTC or sats gives you a different perspective: are you accumulating the hardest asset, or are you treading water in a currency that loses purchasing power every year? Compass shows both — you decide which number matters most.
What are exchange balances?
Bitcoin you hold on an exchange (Coinbase, Kraken, River, etc.) is not in your hardware wallet, so your xpub won't capture it. You can log those balances manually in Finances under "Exchange balances" to include them in your total Bitcoin tally.
Goals
How do I set a Bitcoin goal?
During onboarding you set your first goal — a target amount in BTC, sats, or USD — and Compass tracks your progress. You can edit it or add more goals anytime from the Goals page.
What goal types are available?
You can set goals for a specific Bitcoin target ("stack 0.1 BTC"), a fiat savings target ("save $10,000"), or a custom milestone. Each goal can have a target date and a monthly contribution amount so Compass can tell you whether you're on track.
Can I have more than one goal?
Yes. You can create multiple goals — for example, a short-term savings target alongside a long-term Bitcoin stack goal. One goal is marked as your "primary" goal and shown prominently on your Overview.
Reflections
What are Reflections?
Reflections are your monthly financial summaries — a snapshot of how you spent, what you stacked, and how your net worth moved over the past 30 days. They're designed to be honest and visual: you see your wins and your waste in the same place.
Can I share my Reflection?
Yes. Each Reflection can be shared as an image or link. Shared Reflections show your Bitcoin progress without revealing sensitive details like exact balances or transaction history unless you choose to include them.
Pricing & Billing
What plans are available?
Just one: the Compass lifetime license — $60 for the first 100 licenses, then $120. One payment, the full app on desktop, mobile, and web, forever. There is no feature-tiered free plan and no subscription.
Can I pay with Bitcoin?
Yes. Compass accepts Bitcoin payments via BTCPay Server — a self-hosted, open-source payment processor, on-chain or Lightning. Pay the lifetime price in sats and get immediate full access. No auto-charge, ever — there's nothing to renew.
Are refunds available?
Yes — every lifetime license comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked. Email hrznbtc@gmail.com within 30 days of purchase and we'll refund you in full (Bitcoin purchases are refunded in sats).
I have an older monthly or annual subscription — what happens to it?
Nothing changes for you. Existing subscriptions keep working exactly as before at the same price, and you can cancel anytime from Settings → Billing (card) — access runs to the end of the paid period. Want to switch? Cancel and grab a lifetime license instead.
Account & Security
What does 'passwordless' mean?
Compass has no passwords. On web, you sign in with a one-time magic link sent to your email. On mobile, you receive a one-time code by SMS. There is no password to forget, reuse, or have stolen. The security of your Compass account is tied to the security of your email inbox or phone.
How is my data protected?
All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access to your data is enforced at the database level — no other user can ever see your records. Your wallet key receives an extra layer of encryption on top of that. Compass is also passwordless, so there are no credentials to breach. See our Privacy Policy for the complete breakdown.
How do I change my name or email?
Go to Settings → Account Details. You can update your display name immediately. Changing your email sends a confirmation link to the new address — your email only updates once you click that link.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings → Account Details and scroll to the bottom. You'll find a "Delete my account" option. Confirm by typing DELETE and your account and all associated data will be permanently removed. This cannot be undone.
Does Compass sell my data?
No. We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal data — ever. Data is shared only with the service providers we use to run the platform (Supabase for the database, Stripe for card payments) under strict confidentiality agreements.
Troubleshooting
I didn't receive my sign-in link. What should I try?
Check your spam or junk folder first — magic links sometimes land there. Make sure you entered the correct email address. Links expire after 1 hour, so request a new one if needed. If the problem persists, contact support.
My Bitcoin balance looks wrong. What should I check?
If you connected via xpub, make sure you exported the correct xpub from your wallet — some wallets have separate xpubs for different account types (native SegWit, Taproot, etc.). If you entered your balance manually, tap the wallet card to update it. If the price seems off, the live BTC price refreshes every few minutes — give it a moment.
The app seems slow or something isn't loading. What should I do?
Try a hard refresh (Cmd+Shift+R on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows). If the issue continues, check your internet connection. If it still persists, contact us via the Support page and include a brief description of what you were doing when it happened.
